Nitrous Oxide Sedation Services in Port Jervis, NY
Ensuring Your Comfort with Gentle Care
Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a colorless, odorless gas that has been the main form of sedation in dentistry for many years. Commonly known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide has been deemed safe for children by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, especially children who experience anxiety and fear, are resistant to anesthesia, have a challenging time sitting still, or have special needs. Nitrous oxide helps patients relax and soothes them, allowing them to stay calm during a wide range of dental procedures.
At Aesthetic Family Dentistry, we offer nitrous oxide to adults and children who are undergoing complex and lengthy treatment or otherwise cannot comfortably tolerate routine care. Dr. Seth Horn, DMD along with his warm, friendly, and experienced team are qualified to provide safe and effective sedation dentistry.

Discover the Advantages of Nitrous Oxide for Dental Procedures
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative agent that safely and effectively manages pain and anxiety during a dental procedure. Contrary to its name, laughing gas does not necessarily make you laugh. Rather, nitrous oxide makes you feel less inhibited by slowing down your nervous system.
The following are common benefits of nitrous oxide sedation:
- Works quickly to numb and relax patients
- Sedation can be increased or decreased at any time
- Safe for young and disabled patients, as well as those with dental anxiety
- Most patients do not experience adverse side effects
Once the nitrous oxide is shut off, patients will receive oxygen for a minimum of five minutes to purge the remaining gas from the patient’s lungs and avoid headaches. Patients must eat lightly prior to the procedure to prevent nausea or vomiting and avoid eating a big meal for up to three hours afterward.
Nitrous oxide should not be used on patients who are currently in the first trimester of pregnancy, with a history of mental health conditions, with a history of substance abuse, with a history of respiratory illnesses, with a vitamin B-12 deficiency, and with methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency (an enzyme condition).
